On the Night
What is a Middle Space salon like? Every time is different, but they usually look like this…
7.30pm Everyone arrives, mingles and gets drinks. At 8pm the speaker introduces
their topic: they speak for five to seven minutes, giving a punchy overview of the
subject or their argument and ending with a provocative statement.
The rest of the salon joins in with opinions, questions, ideas, and the discussion
begins. It can be intense and sometimes takes unexpected turns. One of us will
always facilitate the conversation, so that everyone gets a chance to speak.
8.45pm A short break. People get drinks and mingle. When we regroup, the
speaker gives another five-minute introduction and the salon takes off again, often
at a slight tangent to the original question. This changes the direction of the
discussion sufficiently and helps to keep momentum flowing.
9.30pm to 10pm We wrap up the conversation. Some people rush off to other engagements or head home, but usually there are animated groups of people still
talking and debating well into the night.
